The Raiffeisen Super League 2016/17 was the 120th season of the top Swiss division in men's football. Ten teams took part. It began on July 23, 2016 with a home game between FC Lugano and FC Luzern (1: 2) and ended on June 2, 2017. From December 12, 2016 to February 3, 2017, it was interrupted by the winter break. On matchday 30, FC Basel became Swiss champions for the 20th time with a 2-1 away win at FC Luzern .

In the Super League, the ten clubs competed against each opponent twice at home and twice away. In total, each team played 36 games. The first-placed FC Basel carries the title of Swiss champions 2017 and receives a starting place in the group stage of the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League . The last placed FC Vaduz will be relegated to the Challenge League.
The second-placed team, BSC Young Boys , will have the chance to reach the group stage of the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League over two qualifying rounds. Since FC Basel has already qualified for the Champions League as a cup winners, FC Lugano will receive a fixed starting place in third place for the group stage of the 2017/18 UEFA Europa League . Fourth-placed FC Sion and fifth-placed FC Luzern will also receive a starting place in the qualifying rounds for the 2017/18 UEFA Europa League.
