Éder Fabián Álvarez Balanta (born February 28, 1993 in Bogotá ) is a Colombian football player . He has been under contract with Club Bruges since September 2019 .

Club career

youth

Éder Balanta started playing football at Fair Play Bogotá and then moved to Academia FC in the Colombian capital.

River Plate

At Academia he was discovered by the talent scouts from CA River Plate and brought to Buenos Aires in Argentina . There he played in the youth and was accepted into the squad of the first team at the age of 18. This was relegated to the second division in 2011. Balanta was not used this season, but the team immediately returned to the Primera División .

In the 2012/13 season, the Colombian made his first professional appearances in the first division on March 23, and just a year later he had secured a regular place in the defense of River Plate. In 2014 he won the Torneo Final with the team and then secured the championship title in the superfinal .

Basel

For the 2016/17 season , Éder Balanta moved to FC Basel . He received a four-year contract. Under coach Urs Fischer , Balanta won the championship title with FCB at the end of the 2016/17 championship . For the club it was the 8th title in a row and the 20th title in the club's history. They also won the cup competition on May 25, 2017 with three to zero against Sion and thus the double .

Club Bruges

At the beginning of September 2019, shortly before the end of the transfer window, a move to the Belgian first division club Club Bruges was agreed. Balanta signed a three-year contract there and became Belgian champions in their first season with the club. At the beginning of June 2020, a contract extension until summer 2024 was agreed.

National team

Éder Balanta recommended himself through the successes at River Plate for missions in the Colombian national team . At the end of 2013 he was called up for the first time in the preparation phase for the soccer World Cup 2014 and on March 5, 2014 against Tunisia he made his debut in the national shirt. In two further friendlies he finally convinced the national coach José Pekerman , who included him in the 23-man Colombian squad for the tournament in Brazil. When the team qualified early for the round of 16 after two of three preliminary round matches, Balanta made his 90-minute world championship debut in the third game against Japan .

Since then, he has been used in three friendly matches for the national team and in a qualifier for the 2018 World Cup , most recently in a friendly against China on November 14, 2017 .
