history

prehistory

The Christian faith first came to the region of today's Zurich Oberland through the Romans . In the Roman fort in Irgenhausen am Pfäffikersee , the foundations of the region's first Christian church can still be seen today. After the collapse of the Roman Empire, the Christian faith came a second time by the monks Gallus and Columban in the Eastern Switzerland . In a document from the year 857, a Rappolt Church is mentioned, which is said to have stood near Wetzikon or Bäretswil , but is later no longer mentioned under this name. The first church building in Wetzikon burned down in 1320. In 1330 a new building took place. The collature of this medieval church in Wetzikon, including the castle, was a fiefdom of the St. Gallen Monastery , which was passed on to different families and finally passed to Zurich in 1563 . After the Reformation in Zurich in 1524, Catholic worship was banned in what is now the Canton of Zurich, which is why the church in Wetzikon was henceforth used for Reformed worship. In 1711–1713, today's Reformed Church was built.

Only the Edict of Tolerance from 1807 allowed the immigrant Catholics to celebrate Catholic services again, but initially only in the city of Zurich. When the modern Confederation was founded in 1848, freedom of religion and freedom of residence was enshrined in the constitution , so that Catholic communities could be established throughout the Canton of Zurich. As a result of the industrialization that created numerous jobs in the Zurich Oberland, people from Catholic areas in Central and Eastern Switzerland, but also from neighboring countries, moved to the region. In June 1866 , the first Holy Mass since the Reformation was celebrated in the Zurich Oberland in the Pilgersteg inn , which was between Dürnten and Rüti . The Capuchin Fathers of the Rapperswil Monastery had committed themselves to the diocese of Chur to take over pastoral care in the Zurich Oberland. The Catholics who immigrated at that time were mostly poor and lived scattered throughout the region, which made it difficult to establish a Catholic community. In 1890 the first Catholic church service since the Reformation took place in Wetzikon. In 1893 the present rectory was built on the Guldisloo hill , the hall of which served as a chapel. In 1923, the St. Franziskus Church on Messikomerstrasse was built as the first parish church in Wetzikon.

Development and construction history

When the number of Catholics in Wetzikon and the surrounding area rose steadily after the Second World War , further church buildings became necessary. First, the Maria Krönung church was built in Gossau . When the construction of a second church in Wetzikon became a priority in the 1970s, the parish decided on a cost-effective but proven solution. The Holy Spirit Church, built in 1975, is the largest of the so-called Fastenopfer Churches . These were made from prefabricated components according to plans by the architect Hanns Anton Brütsch a total of 17 times in Switzerland between 1966 and 1977. While the majority of these churches were co-financed by the Fastenopfer aid organization , the construction of the Holy Spirit Church in Wetzikon took place without this financial support. Since the actual Fastenopfer Church was designed too small for the needs of the parish of Wetzikon, the concept of the Fastenopfer Church was changed by the architect Richard P. Krieg. In contrast to the other Fastenopfer churches, the Heilig Geist church has an annex with a sloping roof on both front sides. This part of the building is part of the church interior on the north-western side, while classrooms and the sacristy are integrated into this part of the building on the opposite, south-eastern side . Like the other younger Fastenopfer churches, the requirements of the cantonal building insurance in Zurich were also implemented at the Church of the Holy Spirit. The girders of this church are not made of wood, but of concrete. On the Federal Day of Thanksgiving, Repentance and Prayer , September 21, 1975, the church was consecrated after seven months of construction by the Bishop of Chur , Johannes Vonderach . In the years 1992 to 1994 the parish center was added. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on September 26, 1992, the foundation stone was laid on March 14, 1993 and the inauguration took place on September 25, 1994.

The parish of Wetzikon is also responsible for sea trenches . With its 7,131 members (as of 2017), it is one of the larger parishes in the Canton of Zurich. The parish of Wetzikon, which also includes the parishes of Gossau, includes the Church of St. Franziskus, the Church of the Holy Spirit in Wetzikon-Kempten and the Church of Maria Krönung in Gossau. With 9,551 members (as of 2017), the Catholic parish of Wetzikon is one of the largest Catholic parishes in the canton of Zurich.

Building description

Exterior

In the district of Kempten, the Church of the Holy Spirit is between the Spital- and Langfurrenstrasse on level ground. The gable roof of the church is striking , which is supplemented by a sloping roof on each of the front sides. There is a cross under the gable on the southeast side of the church. A bell made by the H. Rüetschi foundry in Aarau in 1975 is embedded in a niche in the roof structure . The bell weighs 375 kg and sounds on the note a '.

Interior and artistic equipment

Through the church portals, which are located on the south-east and north-west side of the church, the visitor enters the church interior, which has a square floor plan. The steep wooden roof gives the church space height and its design is reminiscent of a tent, which in the Old Testament is thematized as God's tent . The room has a simple design, the wooden benches offer space for 300 visitors and are oriented towards the sanctuary. On the northwest side of the church there is a confessional and a niche for lighting candles. The stained glass windows were designed by Johann Jakob Zemp in 1975 and deal with God's being on the move with people, which takes up the theme of God's tent again. Johann Jakob Zemp also designed the mosaic that depicts the Church's Way of the Cross .
