It is located at Chapfstrasse 25 and is the work of the architect Fritz Metzger , whose church buildings have made a significant contribution to shaping modern Catholic church architecture in Switzerland.

history

prehistory

The Christian faith first came to the region of today's Zurich Oberland through the Romans . In the Roman fort in Irgenhausen am Pfäffikersee , the foundations of the region's first Christian church can still be seen today. After the collapse of the Roman Empire, the Christian faith came a second time by the monks Gallus and Columban in the Eastern Switzerland . In a document from the year 857, a Rappolt Church is mentioned, which is said to have stood near Wetzikon or Bäretswil , but is later no longer mentioned under this name. A first church building in Gossau was Our Lady devoted why today's Catholic Church of Gossau and the Mother of God is consecrated. In 1339 the church was dedicated to St. Martin of Tours . Archaeological excavations show that the first church was built in the 7th or 8th century. Remains of a Romanesque church are preserved, a Gothic one was built in the 14th and 15th centuries, which was extended in 1717 and demolished in 1819. After the Reformation in Zurich in 1524, Catholic worship was banned in what is now the Canton of Zurich, which is why the church in Gossau was used for Reformed worship from then on.

It was not until the Edict of Tolerance from 1807 that Catholics who immigrated to the canton of Zurich were allowed to celebrate Catholic services again, but initially only in the city of Zurich. When the modern Confederation was founded in 1848, freedom of religion and freedom of residence was enshrined in the constitution , so that Catholic communities could be established throughout the Canton of Zurich. As a result of the industrialization that created numerous jobs in the Zurich Oberland, people from Catholic areas in Central and Eastern Switzerland , but also from neighboring countries, moved to the region. In June 1866 , the first Holy Mass since the Reformation was celebrated in the Zurich Oberland at the Pilgersteg inn , which was between Dürnten and Rüti ZH . The Capuchin Fathers of the Rapperswil Monastery had committed themselves to the diocese of Chur to take over pastoral care in the Zurich Oberland. The Catholics who immigrated at that time were mostly poor and lived scattered throughout the region, which made it difficult to establish a Catholic community. In 1890 the first Catholic church service since the Reformation took place in Wetzikon . In 1893 the present rectory was built on the Guldisloo hill , the hall of which served as a chapel. In 1923, the St. Franziskus Church on Messikomerstrasse was built as the first parish church in Wetzikon. Until the construction of the Catholic Church in Gossau, Catholic worshipers had attended Sunday services in Wetzikon since 1890. The way there was often covered on foot.

Development and construction history

When the number of Catholics in Wetzikon and the surrounding area rose steadily after the Second World War , further church buildings became necessary. Around 1950 the idea was to build a joint church with Grüningen in the Ottikon area. A solution for the current location was only found when a plot of land in Gossau am Laufenbach could be purchased. In the period that followed, money was collected for the construction of a Catholic church in Gossau. B. by moving in the weekly bats and on the occasion of church events. Donations were also received from other communities in the Canton of Zurich and from the rest of Switzerland. In addition, many parishioners made loans available.

The building plans for the church were drawn up by the architect Fritz Metzger, Zurich. A first draft was for a floor plan in the shape of a fish. This floor plan would have taken up the early Christian symbol of Christ, the fish. An extension of the main room of the church in the form of a fish tail, which would have been on the southeast side of the completed church and would have offered 80 additional seats, was not implemented. Emil Künzli, Gossau, and Alfred Fässler, Grüningen worked as builders. On February 2, 1958, on the feast of Maria Candlemas , the parish people met to break the first sod . After a construction period of 14 months, the new Mariae Coronation Church was inaugurated on May 3, 1959 by the Auxiliary Bishop of Chur, Johannes Vonderach . The bells were installed in the church in 1961 and the organ in 1980. From 2003 to 2004 the parish center next to the church was built.

The parish of Maria Krönung Gossau is one of the small Catholic parishes in the canton of Zurich with 2,400 members (as of 2017). Together with Wetzikon and Seegräben, Gossau forms a common parish.

Building description

Church tower and exterior

The church tower is visible from afar on Chapfstrasse . The bells are tuned to the notes b, g and f and blend in an ecumenical sense with the sound of the Reformed church bells. They were ordered two years after the church was built in May from the Karl Czudnochowsky foundry , Erdingen near Munich, and transferred to Gossau in September 1961. After the consecration of the bells on September 17th, the Federal Day of Prayer , by the Bishop of Chur, Christian Caminada , they were pulled up into the tower by the Gossau school children.

Interior and artistic equipment

From Chapfstrasse , visitors enter the interior via low steps or a ramp through the entrance of the church. This was built in the shape of a fish belly. The church interior is kept simple, the pews are arranged in a semicircle and aligned with the altar , which at the time the church was built was already slightly removed from the wall and so did not have to be rearranged after the liturgical reform as a result of the Second Vatican Council in order to celebrate the To enable fair from the other side. A striking design element is the ribbon of windows, which visually contrasts the ceiling with the church walls so that the roof appears to float above the walls. At the entrance, the baptismal font is reminiscent of the rock from which Moses, at God's command, let living water flow out. The location of the fountain signals that baptism is at the beginning of a lifelong journey. The font is an early work by the artist Georg Malin , who gave the marble block the shape of a wave, which refers to the baptism. The window front on the east side, designed by Paul Stöckli from Ennentmoos NW, gives the church a colorful light. The glass windows contain images from the Lauretanian litany , which the church patron Mary interprets as a model in faith. The glass window on the wall behind the font is also by Paul Stöckli. The Way of the Cross was designed by goldsmith Willy Buck from Wil SG . The way of the cross shows the suffering of Jesus. The titles of the 14 stations come from Romano Guardini . Following these waypoints, the believer finally arrives at the cross on which Jesus is represented with a heart open to the whole world. This path continues to the tabernacle , the repository of the Eucharistic bread, which reminds people of the presence of Jesus. The front of the tabernacle is decorated with the words of the risen One: " Resurrexi et adhuc tecum sum " - "I am risen and from now on with you". The Marien sculpture shows the crowned Mother of God. With her right hand she points to the altar, the place where Jesus' presence among the people in the Eucharist is celebrated. The figure of Mary and the cross, a modern representation of the Sacred Heart, were created by Arnold D'Altri from Zurich.

organ

Mönch organ from 1980

The first organ in the church came from the Catholic Church in Landquart GR and was given to the diaspora community in Gossau free of charge. It was a two-manual organ, which was dismantled by organ builder Schamberger, Uster , together with volunteers in Landquart and transported to Gossau. When it was installed in the Maria Krönung church, it received an electric action and a new console . On Palm Sunday , April 15, 1962, a celebratory organ concert took place with the participation of Father Baptist Bolliger, Einsiedeln Abbey , and the church choir of Wetzikon. After a good 15 years, this first organ showed weaknesses, which is why it was first clarified whether a total overhaul was possible. Since this was no longer justifiable, it was decided to procure a new organ. The new instrument comes from the organ building company Mönch , Überlingen. Siegfried Hildebrand, St. Gallen, was brought in as a consultant for organ building. The new organ is a mechanical instrument with 14 sounding stops on two manuals including a pedal. It was inaugurated on May 4, 1980. On the same day there was also an organ concert by organ expert Siegfried Hildebrand.
