Christian Caminada

Christian Caminada (born January 6, 1876 in the hamlet of Surin, Lumnezia in Lugnez , Graubünden , Switzerland ; † January 18, 1962 in Chur ) was bishop of the Roman Catholic diocese of Chur from 1941 to 1962.

After attending the monastery schools of Disentis and Einsiedeln as well as the Salesian College of Alassio on the Italian Riviera , he entered the seminary in 1897 . On July 22, 1900 he received from the Bishop of Chur John Fidelis Battaglia the priesthood . After being a pastor in Dardin , (1901) Obersaxen (1905) and Trun was (1912), Bishop appointed him Georg Schmid of Grüneck 1919 as curator of the Cathedral Chapter of Chur. From 1934 he was vicar general .

Christian Caminada was elected Bishop of Chur on September 23, 1941 to succeed Laurenz Matthias Vincenz . He received his episcopal ordination on November 23, 1941 in the Chur cathedral by the then Apostolic Nuncio of Switzerland, Filippo Bernardini .

In addition to his work as a bishop, Caminada made a name for himself as an explorer of religious customs and legends of Graubünden and as an art historian . He completed the last two volumes of the Romansh Chrestomathy founded by Caspar Decurtins .

In 1942 he received an honorary doctorate from the Theological Faculty of the University of Friborg (Switzerland) .
