The son of the farmer Jakob Fidelis Battaglia and Agnes Guetg was born into a family from which several clergy came and the members of the Chur cathedral chapter were: Johann Anton Battaglia (1776–1802), Bartholomäus Battaglia (1814–1826), Johann Maria Battaglia (1827–1843) and Bartholomäus Anton Battaglia (1862–1868). Since his mother died early, he was raised by a spiritual uncle; this sent him to the boys' school in Chur and then to the collegiate school in Einsiedeln. As an alumnus he went to study theology at the Germanicum in Rome in 1850 . There he received the sacrament of ordination on June 2, 1855 . In 1879, Bishop Franz Konstantin Rampa appointed him to the cathedral chapter of Chur.
On November 6, 1888 he was elected Bishop of Chur. Pope Leo XIII. confirmed this election on February 14, 1889. He was ordained bishop on March 31, 1889 in the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin in Chur by the Bishop of St. Gallen , Augustin Egger ; Co- consecrators were Friedrich Fiala , the bishop of Basel and Johann Nepomuk Zobl , the auxiliary bishop in Brixen for Feldkirch . He went on a company trip , visited parishes, established new parishes , supported the establishment of Catholic associations and in 1896 was a co-founder of the Christian Democratic People's Party in Graubünden .
On February 5, 1908, he announced his resignation and resigned himself to the diocese of Chur. Pope Pius X accepted his resignation on February 12, 1908 and appointed him titular archbishop pro hac vice of Cyzicus on July 3, 1909 .
He died on 10 September 1913 at the St. Johannes-Stift in Zizers suffering a stroke and was buried on 13 September of the same year in the cemetery next to the Cathedral of the Assumption.
