Viktor Bieler (born March 16, 1881 in Termen ; † March 19, 1952 in Sion ) was Bishop of Sion .

Life

Viktor Bieler was the son of Johann Bieler and Aloysia Borter. After attending the colleges of Brig and Sitten, he entered the seminary and later went to Innsbruck , where he received his doctorate in canon law and church history. He was ordained priest in 1907 by Jules-Maurice Abbet , who immediately installed him as episcopal chancellor. His teaching activity began in 1909 as a professor at the Sion seminary.

Pope Benedict XV appointed him in 1919 almost a year after the death of Jules-Maurice Abbet as Bishop of Sion. Due to the new canon law, the cathedral chapter waived the right to propose proposals beforehand and after lengthy negotiations, and the Grand Council waived the right to vote, which enabled the Holy See to be directly appointed bishop in Sion since 1499. The episcopal ordination took place by Jakob Stammler , Bishop of Basel and Lugano .

With the diocesan synod of 1925, Viktor Bieler was able to implement the new canon law that came into force in 1917 in his diocese. In 1932 he consecrated Bernard Alexis Burquier , the abbot of Saint-Maurice , titular bishop of Bethlehem and in 1939 installed François-Nestor Adam as provost of the Great St. Bernard . From 1935 until his death in 1952 he was dean of the Swiss Bishops' Conference . The honorary title of Papal Assistant to the Throne was given to him in 1944 by Pope Pius XII. awarded.
