Norbert Brunner (born June 21, 1942 in Naters , Canton of Valais , Switzerland ) is a Roman Catholic clergyman and emeritus bishop of Sitten . From 2010 to 2013 he was President of the Swiss Bishops' Conference .
Life
Norbert Brunner studied philosophy at the Sion seminary in Givisiez and theology at the University of Innsbruck . He was ordained a priest on July 6, 1968 . He then studied moral theology and canon law at the University of Friborg (Switzerland) . In 1970 he became a teacher and prefect at the boarding school Kollegium Maria Hilf in Schwyz . In 1972 he moved to the diocese of Sion and from 1972 to 1987 was the episcopal chancellor and court notary and rector of the Cathedral of Our Lady in Sion. After working as a diocesan economist from 1988 to 1991, Norbert Brunner was appointed vicar general of the Bishop of Sion.
On April 1, 1995, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Sion. He was ordained bishop on June 9, 1995, by his predecessor Henri Cardinal Schwery . Co -consecrators were Archbishop Peter Zurbriggen , Apostolic Nuncio in Mozambique , and Bishop Henri Salina CRA , Abbot of Saint-Maurice . His motto is Ad serviendam Spem nostram (“In the service of our hope”).
Norbert Brunner has been a member of the Presidium of the Swiss Bishops' Conference (SBK) since 1998. In 2010 he was elected President of the Swiss Bishops' Conference; In 2013, the St. Gallen Bishop Markus Büchel succeeded him.
On June 5, 2013, Brunner announced his resignation as bishop. Pope Francis considered Brunner's resignation “benevolently” and commissioned steps to appoint a successor. Brunner remained in office until his successor took office. On July 8, 2014, Pope Francis accepted his resignation and appointed Jean-Marie Lovey CRB as his successor. He was installed in the office on September 28, 2014.
Act
After his appointment as bishop, Brunner said that he considered the abolition of celibacy and the use of viri probati possible for “theological reasons and the constitution of the church”. In the run-up to Gay Pride 2001 in Sion , he then declared that a “devilish game” was being played here “under the guise of a legitimate concern with justified arguments”, and this statement triggered an unexpected media response.
Brunner caused a stir in April 2012 when he refused to allow the 77-year-old pastor Walter Stupf, who had looked after the Eischoll congregation for 17 years, to spend his old age in the local rectory.
