Urban Federer OSB (born August 17, 1968 in Zurich - Fluntern ) is the 59th abbot of Einsiedeln Abbey .

Life

Urban Federer grew up in Zurich and attended the monastery school in Einsiedeln from 1985 to 1988. In 1988, he joined the Congregation of Benedictine in and began the novitiate in the monastery of Einsiedeln. He made perpetual profession on November 1, 1992 . Federer received on 11 June 1994, the sacrament of Holy Orders . He studied philosophy and theology at the theological school of the monastery, after which he completed a degree in German and history at the University of Freiburg im Üchtland . From 2001 he worked as a teacher for religion, German and history at the secondary school in Einsiedeln. In Germany he also completed training in Gregorian chant . In 2007 he was awarded a PhD with a dissertation on medieval German studies ( mystical experience in literary dialogue ). phil. PhD . The work deals with the intellectual exchange between the priest Heinrich von Nördlingen and the Dominican Margaretha Ebner in the 14th century.

Since 2010 he was dean (prior) and vicar general of the territorial abbey . He was the chief editor for the monastery's own magazine "Salve" as well as a member of the board of the Einsiedler Welttheater-Gesellschaft . Federer is also a cantor and as choral magister he was responsible for the maintenance of the Gregorian chant in the monastery.

On November 23, 2013 he was elected abbot for a period of 12 years by the 55 monks of the monastery in Einsiedeln who were eligible to vote. Pope Francis confirmed the election on December 10, 2013. The abbot's benediction by Bishop Markus Büchel and the inauguration took place on December 22, 2013. As a hermit abbot, he is also an ex officio member of the Swiss Bishops' Conference and heads the Fahr Benedictine abbey .

In 2017 Urban Federer was appointed Grand Officer of the Papal Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher by Cardinal Grand Master Edwin Frederick Cardinal O'Brien and on March 18, 2017 in the Abbey of Saint-Maurice by Bishop Pier Giacomo Grampa , Grand Prior of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher Jerusalem , invested in the Swiss Lieutenancy.

Federer is the brother of the former Zurich National Councilor Barbara Schmid-Federer (CVP). He is a member of the GV Corvina Einsiedeln and the AV Fryburgia in the Swiss Student Association (Schw. StV) .
