Jean César Scarcella CRSA (born December 28, 1951 in Montreux , Canton of Vaud , Switzerland ) is a Roman Catholic religious and abbot of the Territorial Abbey of Saint-Maurice .

Life

Jean César Scarcella graduated from high school at Saint-Maurice Abbey in 1972 and initially studied medicine at the University of Lausanne for two years . He then completed a music degree at the Lausanne Conservatory , which he completed in 1982 with a diploma as a piano teacher.

In 1984 he entered the novitiate of the religious order of Augustinian Canons , made solemn profession on May 21, 1988 and was ordained a priest on March 21, 1990 . Before that he studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the University of Freiburg from 1985 to 1990 .

In addition to his pastoral duties, he was sacristan and rector of the abbey church in the monastery . In 2009 he became prior and vicar general of the territorial abbey and was also the novice master .

The general chapter of the abbey elected him on April 10, 2015 as the 95th abbot of Saint-Maurice; Pope Francis confirmed the election on May 22, 2015. The abbot's benediction was granted to him by the Bishop of Sion , Jean-Marie Lovey CRB , on August 1 of the same year.

In 2017 Jean César Scarcella was appointed Grand Officer of the Papal Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher by Cardinal Grand Master Edwin Frederick Cardinal O'Brien and on March 18, 2017 in the Abbey of Saint-Maurice by Bishop Pier Giacomo Grampa , Grand Prior of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher to Jerusalem , invested in the Swiss Lieutenancy.
