Edwin Frederick O'Brien
Edwin Frederick Cardinal O'Brien OESSH (born April 8, 1939 in New York ) is an American Cardinal Curia of the Roman Catholic Church . From 2011 to 2019 he was Grand Master of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
Life
Education and activity
Edwin O'Brien was born in the Bronx , New York , where he attended several Catholic schools. After finishing school he studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Archbishop's Seminary of St. Joseph in Dunwoodie ( Yonkers ). On May 29, 1965, he received the sacrament of ordination through Cardinal Francis Spellman .
He was then chaplain of Most Holy Trinity Parish and civil chaplain of the United States Military Academy at West Point . From 1970 to 1973 he was military chaplain of the US Army with the 82nd US Airborne Division at Fort Bragg in North Carolina (1970-71), with the 173rd US Airborne Brigade and the 1st US Cavalry Division in Vietnam (1970-71 ) and at Fort Gordon , Georgia (1972-73); his last rank was captain .
After this time he was released to study at the Pontifical North America College in Rome and received his doctorate in 1976 in moral theology at the Pontifical University “St. Thomas von Aquin ” with a dissertation on the topic “ The Origin and Development of Moral Principles in the Writings of Paul Ramsey ” (“ Origin and Development of Moral Principles in Paul Ramsey ”).
In 1976 he became chaplain at Saint Patrick's Cathedral in New York and Vice Chancellor of the Archdiocese. In 1981 he was appointed Diocesan Director of Social Communications and since 1983 has been the personal secretary to Cardinal Cooke , New York's Archbishop. At the same time, he took on the role of pastor for the Catholic doctors of the archdiocese. In 1983 he was appointed monsignor by Pope John Paul II .
Edwin O'Brien was Regens (Rector) of the Archbishop's Saint Joseph Seminary in Dunwoodie in Yonkers, New York (1985-89; 1994-97) and Rector of the Pontifical North America College in Rome (1990-94)
Auxiliary Bishop in New York and Military Archbishop USA
February 6, 1996 Pope appointed him John Paul II. To the titular of Diocese of Thizica and ordered him to auxiliary bishop in New York . The episcopal ordination donated him on March 25, 1996 the Archbishop of New York, Cardinal John Joseph O'Connor ; Co-consecrators were Patrick Sheridan , Auxiliary Bishop in New York, and John Gavin Nolan , American Military Bishop . His motto is: Pastores dabo vobis (“I give you shepherds”) and comes from the book of Jeremiah ( Jer 3:15 EU ).
Just one year later, on 7 April 1997, he was appointed coadjutor - Military Archbishop of the United States and appointed Titular Archbishop pro hac vice of Diocese of Thizica levied. On August 12 of the same year he finally became military archbishop of the United States of America .
Archbishop of Baltimore
Pope Benedict XVI called O'Brien on July 12, 2007 Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Baltimore . The inauguration of Archbishop Pietro Sambi , the Apostolic Nuncio in the United States, took place on October 1 of the same year. On June 29, 2008 ( Peter and Paul ) he received the pallium in Rome .
Cardinal Grand Master of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem
On August 29, 2011 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him. Pro- Grand Master of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem . O'Brien received the full title of "Grand Master" on March 15, 2012. He is the Collar Knight of the Order of Knights (KCollHS).
In the consistory of February 18, 2012, Benedict XVI took him. as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry San Sebastiano al Palatino in the college of cardinals . After his resignation, Cardinal O'Brien attended the 2013 conclave , which Pope Francis elected.
On December 8, 2019, Fernando Filoni was appointed Grand Master of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem by Pope Francis . He succeeds Edwin Frederick O'Brien, whose retirement petition for old age was granted by Pope Francis.
