In the KPD, Roth belonged to the “left” wing around Ruth Fischer and Arkadi Maslow and was active in women's political work, among other things. In 1922 she replaced the resigned MP Aloys Rink in the Landtag of the People's State of Hesse and was re-elected in 1924. After the party leadership around Fischer and Maslow was dismissed in autumn 1925, she belonged to the left opposition to the new party leadership around Ernst Thälmann and was expelled from the party in May 1927.

After exercising her state parliament mandate as a non-attached member of parliament until the legislature was dissolved in November 1927, Katharina Roth joined the Lenin League in spring 1928 , but later withdrew from active politics.
