Cardinal John Joseph O'Connor (born January 15, 1920 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † May 3, 2000 in New York ) was an American priest . He was Archbishop of New York from 1984 until his death in 2000 .

Life

John Joseph O'Connor was born on January 15, 1920, the fourth of five children to Thomas O'Connor and Mary Gomble O'Connor. As it became known in 2014, Mary Gomble O'Connor was Jewish who converted to Catholicism. According to Sister O'Connor's testimony, the siblings grew up following the traditions of Judaism.

At the age of 16, O'Connor entered the seminary of St. Charles Borromeo in Philadelphia and studied Catholic theology there . On December 15, 1945 O'Connor received the sacrament of Holy Orders by Hugh Louis Lamb , the auxiliary bishop in Philadelphia . Initially, O'Connor served as a pastor in the archdiocese for seven years ; from 1953 he worked as a military chaplain for almost 27 years.

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Cursola and military bishop of the US armed forces in 1979 . He was ordained bishop by John Paul II on May 27, 1979. Co- consecrators were the secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , Archbishop Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy , and the substitute for the state secretariat , Archbishop Eduardo Martínez Somalo . O'Connor's motto was There can be no love without justice , meaning that where there is no love, there can be no justice.

O'Connor was named Bishop of Scranton on May 6, 1983, and was installed in office on June 29 of the same year. Only a few months later, on January 26, 1984, he was named Archbishop of New York. The inauguration took place on March 19 of the same year.

In 1983 he was appointed Grand Prior of the USA Eastern Lieutenancy of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem , based in New York, by the Cardinal Grand Master of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem , Maximilien de Fürstenberg .

Pope John Paul II accepted John Joseph O'Connor on May 25, 1985 as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Giovanni e Paolo in the college of cardinals . O'Connor was considered conservative and was known for his strong advocacy for the rights of workers and the poor. He died on May 3, 2000 in New York.
