Edward Michael Egan
Edward Michael Cardinal Egan (born April 2, 1932 in Oak Park , Illinois - † March 5, 2015 in New York City ) was Archbishop of New York .
Life
Edward Michael Egan received the sacrament of ordination on December 15, 1957 after studying Catholic theology and philosophy , which he completed with a doctorate in canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome .
He then worked as secretary to Cardinal Albert Meyer and as a sub-rain for the Roman college for the North American students. From 1964 to 1972 he was responsible for ecumenical and human rights issues in the Archdiocese of Chicago . Pope Paul VI appointed him on November 20, 1972 judge (Prelato Uditore) at the Court of Justice of the Rota Romana . At the same time he taught practical legal issues to the students of the Pontifical Gregorian University.
On April 1, 1985 it appointed Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Allegheny and auxiliary bishop in New York. On May 22, 1985 he received the episcopal ordination through Bernardin Cardinal Gantin ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of New York, John Joseph O'Connor , and the Bishop of Arlington , John Richard Keating . On November 5, 1988, John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Bridgeport and on May 11, 2000, Archbishop of New York .
In 2000 he was the Cardinal Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem , Carlo Furno , the Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy USA Eastern of the Equestrian Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem appointed, based in New York.
The College of Cardinals was one Edward Egan since 21 February 2001 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo on. In October 2001, he assumed the role of General Plenipotentiary for the 10th Ordinary Assembly of the Synod of Bishops .
He was a member of the Pontifical Council for the Family .
In June 2003 he was criticized for not disclosing the names of priests accused of sexual abuse to the public. His spokesman said the names of innocent people should possibly be protected. Groups like the liberal Voice of the Faithful criticized the fact that the internal church procedure, which is separate from the state, did not take place in public. He took part in the 2005 conclave after the death of John Paul II .
On February 23, 2009 Pope Benedict XVI. Egan's motion to resign from the office of Archbishop of New York for reasons of age. After the resignation of Benedict XVI. he did not take part in the 2013 conclave because he had already passed the age limit of 80 years. He died of cardiac arrest in March 2015.
