The diocese of Arlington was on May 28, 1974 by Pope Paul VI. Established with the Apostolic Constitution Supernae Christifidelium from cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of Washington and the Diocese of Richmond and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Baltimore as a suffragan .
