Clarke County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 12,652 people and a population density of 28 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Berryville .

Clarke County is located almost in the far north of Virginia, bordering West Virginia and has an area of 462 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Loudoun County , Fauquier County , Warren County, and Frederick County .
history
It was formed on March 8, 1836 from parts of Frederick County. It was named after the explorer and general George Rogers Clark .

As of the 2000 census , Clarke County had 12,652 people in 4,942 households and 3,513 families. The population density was 28 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 91.15 percent white, 6.73 percent African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 0.49 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.55 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.85 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.46 percent of the population.
Of the 4,942 households, 29.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.2 percent were married couples living together, 8.9 percent were single mothers, 28.9 percent were non-families, 24.1 percent were single households, and 9.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.97 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.4 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 5.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 98.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 96.6 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 51,601 , and the median income for a family is $ 59,750. Males had a median income of $ 40,254 versus $ 30,165 for females. The per capita income was $ 24,844. 4.2 percent of families and 6.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. 7.1 percent of them were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 11.1 percent were people over 65 years of age.
