Botetourt County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000, the county had 30,496 residents and a population density of 22 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Fincastle . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Botetourt County is located in western Virginia, about 30 km to the west from West Virginia and has an area of ​​1,414 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Rockbridge County , Bedford County , Roanoke County , Craig County, and Alleghany Counties .

history

It was formed on November 7, 1769 from parts of Augusta County and Rockbridge County. It was named after Norborne Berkeley, 4th Baron Botetourt , better known Lord Botetourt , a governor of the Virginia colony.

As of the 2000 census , there were 30,496 people in 11,700 households and 9,114 families in Botetourt County. The population density was 22 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.91 percent white, 3.52 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.47 percent Asian and 0.19 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.69 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.59 percent of the population.

Of the 11,700 households, 32.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 67.8 percent were married couples living together, 7.0 percent were single mothers, 22.1 percent were non-families, 19.2 percent were single households and 7.6 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 2.92 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.4 percent of residents under the age of 18, 5.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 28.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.2 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 99.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 98.4 men statistically.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 48,731 , and the median income for a family is $ 55,125. Males had a median income of $ 37,182 versus $ 25,537 for females. The per capita income was $ 22,218. 3.6 percent of families and 5.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. 5.4 percent of these were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 6.5 percent were people over 65 years of age.
