Chesterfield County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 259,903 people and a population density of 236 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Chesterfield .

Chesterfield County is located in east-east Virginia and covers an area of ​​1,132 square kilometers, of which 29 square kilometers are water. 4th Earl of Chesterfield

In 1634 the King of England ordered the Virginia colony to be divided into 8 shires. One of them was Henrico County. On May 25, 1749, the county was formed from parts of Henrico County. It was named after Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield . In 1831 the first railway line, the Chesterfield Railroad, was built. The Chesterfield cigarette brand was named after this county because it was formerly a center of tobacco growing.

According to the 2000 United States Census , Chesterfield County had 259,903 people in 93,772 households and 72,110 families. The population density was 236 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 76.74 percent white, 17.77 percent African American, 0.33 percent Native American, 2.37 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.34 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.41 percent were descended from two or more races.
