Charles City County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 6,926 people and a population density of 15 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Charles City .

Charles City County is located in east-east Virginia and has an area of 529 square kilometers, of which 56 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: New Kent County , James City County , Prince George County , Chesterfield County, and Henrico County .
history
It was formed in 1634 as the Charles City Shire . A few years later the shires were converted to Original County and occasionally renamed, but not Charles City County, which has remained the same within its boundaries. The courthouse, still in use today, but renovated, was built between 1750 and 1760. It is one of five courthouses in the United States that was built before the Revolutionary War and has served as a court without interruption.

According to the 2000 United States Census , Charles City County had 6926 people in 2670 households and 1975 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 35.66 percent white, 54.85 percent African American, 7.84 percent Native American, 0.10 percent Asian and 0.17 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.37 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.65 percent of the population.
Of the 2,670 households, 27.5 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 53.6 percent were married couples living together, 15.2 percent were single mothers, 26.0 percent were non-families, 22.5 percent were single households, and 8.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.02.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.1 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 28.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 12.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 96.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were statistically 94.8 men.
The median income for a household in the 42,745 USD , and the median income for a family was 49,361 USD. Males had a median income of $ 32,402 versus $ 26,000 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,182. 10.6 percent of the population and 8.0 percent of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 13.0 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 18.5 percent were people over 65 years of age.
