Benjamin Harrison V
Benjamin Harrison V (born April 5, 1726 on the Berkeley Plantation in Charles City County , Colony of Virginia , † April 24, 1791 ibid) was a North American plantation owner and one of the leaders of the American independence movement . As one of the signatories of the United States' Declaration of Independence, he is one of the American Founding Fathers .
The son of Benjamin Harrison IV and Anne Carter and grandson of the plantation owner Robert Carter III was educated at the College of William and Mary and was the first person in the Harrison family to achieve national notoriety. He lived all his life on the Berkeley Plantation, home of the Harrison family in Virginia, where his children were born. Harrison represented Surry County and Charles City Counties in the House of Representatives from 1766 to 1776. He was Virginia's delegate to the Continental Congress from 1774 to 1777 , signed the Declaration of Independence, and was Governor of Virginia from 1782 to 1784 .
His son William and great grandson Benjamin Harrison became Presidents of the United States . His other son, Carter Bassett Harrison , also signed the Declaration of Independence. Peyton Randolph was his brother-in-law. His grandson John Scott Harrison became a member of Congress , as did his great-great-grandson, William Henry Harrison , who was named after his son .
