Henry Alexander Wise (born December 3, 1806 in Drummondtown (now Accomac ), Virginia , †  September 12, 1876 in Richmond , Virginia) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) and general of the Confederate Army .

Life

After finishing his studies at Washington College in Pennsylvania , Wise first pursued a legal career. He was inducted into the bar in 1828 and then began practicing in Nashville , Tennessee . From March 4, 1833 to February 12, 1844, he was a representative of Virginia in the United States House of Representatives . At times he was also a member of the Whig Party .

In 1843, Wise was appointed US ambassador to France , but the Senate did not confirm it . In 1844 he was able to take up the office of ambassador to Brazil , which he held until 1847.

From 1856 to 1860, Wise was governor of the state of Virginia. He had John Brown , an opponent of slavery , sentenced to death to make an example. During the war he served as brigadier general and advised General Robert E. Lee to surrender at Appomattox Court House . After the war he became a lawyer in Richmond. His two sons, John and Richard, were Congressmen. His brother-in-law was Northern General George Gordon Meade .
