Robert S. Garnett (politician)

Robert Selden Garnett (born April 26, 1789 at Loretto , Essex County , Virginia , †  August 15, 1840 at Lloyds , Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1817 and 1827 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Robert Garnett was the younger brother of Congressman James M. Garnett (1770-1843) and a cousin of Charles F. Mercer (1778-1858), who also sat in the US House of Representatives. He attended the College of New Jersey , which later became Princeton University . In 1812 he married Charlotte de Gouges , a granddaughter of Olympe de Gouges . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began working in this profession at Lloyds. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Republican Party . He was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives in 1816 and 1817 .

In the congressional elections of 1816 Garnett was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the twelfth constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded William H. Roane on March 4, 1817 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1827 . In the mid-1820s he joined the movement around the future US President Andrew Jackson . In 1826 he renounced another candidacy.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Robert Garnett practiced as a lawyer again. He died on August 15, 1840 on his estate in Champlain near Lloyds, where he was also buried.
