Thomas Gholson

Thomas Gholson Jr. (* around 1780 in Brunswick , Brunswick County , Virginia , † July 4, 1816 there ) was an American politician . Between 1808 and 1816 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Gholson was the uncle of Congressman James Gholson (1798-1848) and a second cousin of Richard D. Gholson (1804-1862), who was governor of the Washington Territory . He was also the uncle and father-in-law of Thomas Saunders Gholson (1808-1868), who was a member of the Confederate Congress . He enjoyed a good education. After studying law and admission to the bar, he began working in this profession in Brunswick. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Republican Party . Between 1806 and 1809 he was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives .

On July 28, 1806, Gholson married Anne Yates. Yates was the daughter of a former Virginia militiaman on General Washington's staff. She was also the granddaughter of William Yates , fifth president of the College of William & Mary (1761–1764) and the namesake of Yates Hall on the college's campus.

After the death of MP John Claiborne , Gholson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the by-election due for the 17th seat of Virginia , where he took up his new mandate on November 7, 1808. After four re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on July 4, 1816 . During this time the British-American War of 1812 fell , in which Gholson took an active part as a staff officer. He was wounded while defending the federal capital Washington. He died on July 4, 1816 of the long-term effects of this wounding. From 1811 to 1813 he headed the Committee on Claims .
