Thomas Jerome "Tom" Bliley Jr. (born January 28, 1932 in Chesterfield County , Virginia ) is a retired American politician . Between 1981 and 2001 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Bliley first attended private schools. In 1948 he graduated from Benedictine High School in Richmond . He then studied until 1952 at Georgetown University in Washington, DC Between 1952 and 1955 he served in the US Navy . In the following years he worked for the family-owned funeral home Joseph W. Bliley Co. Funeral Home , of which he became president. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1968 and 1970 he was first deputy mayor and from 1970 to 1977 mayor of Richmond.

In the 1980 congressional election , Bliley was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded David E. Satterfield on January 3, 1981 . After nine re-elections, he was able to complete ten legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 2001 . Since 1993 he has represented the seventh district of his state as the successor to George Allen . Since 1995 he has been chairman of the trade committee .

In 2000 Thomas Bliley decided not to run again. He is married and has two grown children.
