Thomas H. Averett

Thomas Hamlet Averett (born July 10, 1800 in Halifax , Halifax County , Virginia , †  June 30, 1855 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1849 and 1853 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Averett attended public schools in his home country. During the British-American War of 1812 he was a drummer. After a subsequent medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and his approval as a doctor, he began to work in this profession in Halifax and the surrounding area. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He served in the Virginia Senate in 1848 and 1849 .

1846 ran unsuccessfully for Averett yet the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC In the congressional elections of 1848 but he was in the third electoral district of Virginia in the Congress elected, where he succeeds on March 4, 1849 Thomas Flournoy took. After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms there until March 3, 1853. These were shaped by the discussions about slavery . This also included the debate about the compromise introduced and passed by Henry Clay in 1850 .

In 1852 Thomas Averett was no longer nominated for re-election by his party. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he worked as a doctor again. He died near Halifax on June 30, 1855.
