William J. Lewis

William J. Lewis (born July 4, 1766 in Augusta County , Colony of Virginia , †  November 1, 1828 in Lynchburg , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1817 and 1819 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Lewis attended public schools in his homeland. From 1800 he began building his Mount Athos plantation near Lynchburg, which he managed all his life. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Republican Party . He served in the Virginia House of Representatives for several years .

In the 1816 congressional election , Lewis was elected to the 15th constituency of Virginia in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded John Kerr on March 4, 1817 . Until March 3, 1819, he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Lewis worked again on his Mount Athos plantation , where he died on November 1, 1828.
