Virgil Hamlin Goode Jr. (born October 17, 1946 in Richmond , Virginia ) is an American politician . Between 1997 and 2009 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Virgil Goode attended Franklin County High School in Rocky Mount until 1965 . This was followed by studies at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville until 1969 . After completing a law degree at the same university and being admitted to the bar in 1973, he began to work in this profession. Between 1969 and 1975 Goode was also a member of the Virginia National Guard. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party at the time . From 1973 to 1997 he was a member of the Virginia Senate . In 1982 and 1994, he tried unsuccessfully to nominate his party for the US Senate elections .

In the 1996 congressional election , Goode was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded Lewis F. Payne on January 3, 1997 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 2009 . In 2000 he declared himself politically independent; In 2002 he joined the Republicans . During his time as a congressman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell . Goode voted for the Iraq war in 2002. In 2008 he was not re-elected. His time in Congress also brought him negative headlines. He has been linked to a bribery scandal. In addition, his campaign financing was critically questioned. However, these events did not have any legal consequences.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Goode changed his party affiliation again and became a member of the Constitution Party , of which he is a member of the federal board. In 2012 he was their presidential candidate, but could not prevail against Barack Obama or Mitt Romney .
