Alexander Newman

Alexander Newman (born October 5, 1804 in Orange , Orange County , Virginia , †  September 8, 1849 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . In 1849 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After a good education, Alexander Newman held several local offices in his homeland. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . From 1836 to 1838 he was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives ; between 1841 and 1846 he was a member of the State Senate . He was then until 1849 post office owner in Wheeling in what is now West Virginia .

In the congressional election of 1848 , Newman was elected to the 15th  constituency of Virginia in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded William Gay Brown on March 4, 1849 . He was able to exercise this mandate until his death on September 8 of the same year. He died while visiting Pittsburgh and was buried in Moundsville .
