Augustus A. Chapman

Augustus Alexandria Chapman (born March 9, 1803 in Union , Monroe County , Virginia , †  June 7, 1876 in Hinton , West Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1843 and 1847 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1825, Augustus Chapman began working in this profession in his hometown of Union, which is now part of West Virginia. He later embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1835 and 1841 he was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives . In the congressional election of 1842 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the twelfth constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded Thomas Walker Gilmer on March 4, 1843 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1847 . These had been shaped by the events of the Mexican-American War since 1845 .

In 1850 and 1851, Chapman was a delegate to a meeting to revise the Virginia Constitution. Between 1857 and 1861 he was again a member of the state parliament. When the civil war broke out , he became a brigadier general of the state militia, which took part in the war as part of the Confederation Army . After its end, Chapman practiced as a lawyer again. He was also active in agriculture. He died on June 7, 1876 in Hinton on the way to the regional Democratic Party conference in Virginia.
