James H. Platt

James Henry Platt, Jr. (* 13. July 1837 in St. John's , Newfoundland ; † 13 August 1894 in Georgetown , Colorado ) was an American politician of the Republican Party and a member of the US House of Representatives for Virginia .

Life

Platt moved early with his parents to Burlington , Vermont , where he attended public schools. After completing his school education, he studied medicine at the University of Vermont and graduated from this degree in 1859. After the outbreak of the Civil War , he joined the Union Army in 1861 and initially served as First Sergeant in the Third Regiment of the Virginia's Volunteer Infantry . In the course of the war he was promoted to captain and finally to lieutenant colonel , but as such refused to be appointed quartermaster of the 6th Corps of the Union Army. At the end of the war he settled in Petersburg on April 6, 1865 and became a member of the Constituent Assembly of Virginia in 1867 and at the same time from 1867 to 1868 of the city ​​council of Petersburg and then moved to Norfolk .

After the resumption of Virginia in the Union, he became a representative of the Republicans on January 26, 1870 a member of the US House of Representatives and represented the second constituency of the state until March 3, 1875 . Most recently he was from March 1873 to March 1875 in the 43rd US Congress chairman of the Committee on Public Buildings and Grounds .

After suffering an election defeat in 1874 and having to leave the House of Representatives, he moved to New York and devoted himself to the manufacture of petroleum products . In 1887 he moved to Colorado and settled in Denver , where he worked in the insurance , papermaking and mining industries .
