George Cabell
George Craighead Cabell (born January 25, 1836 in Danville , Virginia , † June 23, 1906 in Baltimore , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1887 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .
Career
George Cabell attended Danville Academy . After a subsequent law degree at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and his 1857 admission as a lawyer, he began to work in Danville in 1858 in this profession. He also published a newspaper there. Between 1858 and 1861 he was a prosecutor in Danville. During the Civil War , Cabell served in the Confederation Army , where he rose to colonel. After the war he practiced as a lawyer again. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .
In the 1874 congressional election , Cabell was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded Christopher Yancy Thomas on March 4, 1875 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1887 . From 1877 to 1881 he was chairman of the Railway and Canal Committee. In 1886 he was not re-elected.
After his time in the US House of Representatives, George Cabell returned to practice as a lawyer. He died on June 23, 1906 in Baltimore and was buried in Danville.
