C. Bascom Slemp (1923)

Campbell Bascom Slemp (born September 4, 1870 in Turkey Cove , Lee County , Virginia , †  August 7, 1943 in Knoxville , Tennessee ) was an American politician . Between 1907 and 1923 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

C. Bascom Slemp was the son of Congressman Campbell Slemp (1839-1907). He attended the public schools of his home country and then until 1891 the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington . For a year he was cadet command at the Marion Military Institute ; until 1901 he taught mathematics at the Virginia Military Institute. After a subsequent law degree at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and his admission to the bar in 1901, he began to work in Wise County in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . From 1905 to 1918 he was party chairman in Virginia. He then moved to the Republican National Committee .

After the death of his father, who died as a member of parliament, Slemp was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC at the by-election due for the ninth seat in Virginia , where he took up his new mandate on December 7, 1907. After seven re-elections, he could remain in Congress until January 3, 1923 . The First World War and the ratification of the 16th , 17th , 18th and 19th amendments to the Constitution took place during this period .

In 1922, Slemp waived another congressional candidacy. Between 1923 and 1925 he served on the staff of US President Calvin Coolidge as Secretary to the President . This position can be compared with the future Chief of Staff of the White House . He then practiced as a lawyer again until 1932; then he retired. Bascom Slemp died in Knoxville on August 7, 1943.
