James MH Beale

James Madison Hite Beale (born February 7, 1786 in Mount Airy , Shenandoah County , Virginia , †  August 2, 1866 in Putnam County , West Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1833 and 1837 and again from 1849 to 1853 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Beale attended public schools in his home country and then worked in agriculture. At the same time he embarked on a political career. He served in the Virginia House of Representatives in 1818 and 1819 . He later became a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1832 , Beale was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 16th constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded William Armstrong on March 4, 1833 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1837 . Since President Andrew Jackson took office in 1829 there was heated debate inside and outside of Congress about its policies. It was about the controversial enforcement of the Indian Removal Act , the conflict with the state of South Carolina , which culminated in the nullification crisis , and the banking policy of the president. From 1835, Beale was chairman of the pension committee for the disabled.

After the end of his first time in the US House of Representatives, he worked again in agriculture. In 1848 he was re-elected to Congress in the 14th district of his state, where he was able to complete two more legislative terms between 1849 and 1853 as the successor to Robert A. Thompson . From 1849 to 1851 he was chairman of the Committee to Control Expenditures on State Properties. In 1852 Beale renounced another candidacy. In the following years he worked again in agriculture.
