Richard Brent (born 1757 in Stafford County , Colony of Virginia , †  December 30, 1814 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician ( Democratic Republican Party ) who represented the state of Virginia in both chambers of Congress .

Richard Brent was born on Richland , his family's estate near the Potomac River . He studied law , became a member of the bar and then began practicing law. In 1788 he represented his home county for the first time in the Virginia House of Representatives ; after moving to Prince William County , he was a member of the House of Parliament again from 1793 to 1794 and from 1800 to 1801. In between he was from March 4, 1795 to March 3, 1799 a member of the US House of Representatives in Washington. Another term of office as a member of the House of Representatives followed from March 4, 1801 to March 3, 1803.

From 1808 to 1810 Richard Brent was State Senator in Virginia before finally representing his state in the US Senate on March 4, 1809 . Before the end of his term in office, he died in Washington in late 1814. He was buried in the family cemetery on the Richland property.

His uncle Daniel Carroll was one of the founding fathers of the United States and a signatory to the Declaration of Independence . His nephew William Leigh Brent was a member of the US House of Representatives for Louisiana from 1823 to 1829 .
