John W. Johnston
John Warfield Johnston (born September 9, 1818 in Washington County , Virginia , † February 27, 1889 in Richmond , Virginia) was an American politician of the Democratic Party . From 1870 to 1883 he sat for the US state Virginia in the US Senate .
biography
Johnston was the only child of Dr. John Warfield Johnston and Louisa Smith Bowen were born at his grandfather's home in Washington County, Virginia. Johnston attended Abingdon Academy , South Carolina College and the University of Virginia . There he studied law . In 1839 he was admitted to the bar and opened a law firm in Tazewell . On October 12, 1841, he married Nicketti Buchanan Floyd, daughter of the former governor of Virginia, John Floyd . They both had twelve children.
Between 1844 and 1846, Johnston served as the Commonwealth Attorney in Tazewell County . From 1846 to 1848 he was finally a member of the Virginia Senate . During the Civil War he was among other things a councilor in Abingdon . After the war he opened a school for girls in Abingdon in 1867. From 1869 to 1870 Johnston served as a judge on the Circuit Superior Court for Law and Chancery in Virginia. In about 1869, Johnston partnered with a young local lawyer named Daniel Trigg. Trigg later became his son-in-law.
Finally, between 1870 and 1883, Johnston represented Virginia in the US Senate. There he was a member of the United States Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry , of which he was chairman from 1879 to 1881. In 1883, Johnston finally resigned from the Senate.
After retiring from active politics, he retired to Richmond, where he again worked as a lawyer. Johnston died in Richmond on February 27, 1889. He was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Wytheville .
