It was formed on December 20, 1799 from parts of Russell County and Wythe County. It was named after Henry Tazewell , a judge and US Senator from Virginia.

As of the 2000 census , Tazewell County had 44,598 people in 18,277 households and 13,232 families. The population density was 33 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.16 percent white, 2.29 percent African American, 0.17 percent Native American, 0.61 percent Asian and 0.16 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.62 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.51 percent of the population.
