Amelia County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 11,400 people and a population density of 12 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Amelia Courthouse .

Amelia County is located just east of the geographic center of Virginia and covers an area of ​​929 square kilometers, of which 5 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Powhatan County , Chesterfield County , Dinwiddie County , Nottoway County , Prince Edward County, and Cumberland County .

history

It was formed in 1734 from parts of Brunswick County and Prince George County. It was named after Princess Amalia Sophia of Great Britain. During the Civil War , General Robert E. Lee and his army spent April 4th and 5th, 1865 in Amelia prior to their encounter with General Ulysses S. Grant and the surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9th, 1865.

The county is named after the British Princess Amelie Sophie , daughter of George II .

Amelia County had a population of 11,400 as of the 2000 census . Of these, 106 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 4,240 households and 3,175 families.
