Southampton County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000 , the county had 17,482 residents and a population density of 11 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Courtland .

Southampton County is located in southeast Virginia, bordering North Carolina to the south and has an area of 1,560 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Isle of Wight County , Greensville County , Sussex County, and Surry County .
history
It was formed in 1749 from parts of Isle of Wight County. The first English settlers came to the area in the 17th century, shortly after the Jamestown settlement was founded in 1607 . In 1634 the colony of Virginia was divided into 8 Shires, then with around 5000 inhabitants. Southampton County was part of the Warrosquyoake Shire , which was renamed Isle of Wight County in 1637. In 1749 part of Isle of Wight County, west of the Blackwater River , became Southampton County. It was named either after the English city of Southampton or after the founder of the Virginia colony, Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton .
On 21/22 August 1831, Southampton County was the scene of the largest slave rebellion in America to date, led by the slave Nat Turner . 58 whites and an unknown number of slaves were killed in this uprising. Turner and his supporters were captured, sentenced, and 20 of them hanged.

Southampton County had a population of 17,482 people as of the 2000 census . 1,565 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 6,279 households and 4,502 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 55.96 percent white, 42.87 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.25 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.53 percent were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.66 percent of the population.
Of the 6,279 households, 30.8 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 54.1 percent were married couples living together, 13.5 percent were single mothers, 28.3 percent were non-families, 24.9 percent were single households and 11.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.02.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.7 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.2 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 111.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 112.5 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 33,995 , and the median income for a family is $ 41,324. Males had a median income of $ 32,436 versus $ 20,831 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,930. 11.7 percent of families and 14.6 percent of the population are below the poverty line. These included 19.9 percent of children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 14.5 percent of residents aged 65 or over.
