According to the 2000 census , Surry County had 6,829 people in 2,619 households and 1,917 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 46.87 percent white, 51.60 percent African American, 0.25 percent Native American, 0.13 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.25 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.86 percent were descended from two or more races.
