Nelson County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000 , the county had 14,445 residents and a population density of 12 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Lovingston .

Nelson County is located in west central Virginia and has an area of 1,228 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Albemarle County , Buckingham County , Appomattox County , Amherst County , Rockbridge County, and Augusta County .

history

It was formed in 1807 from parts of Amherst County. It was named after Thomas Nelson, Jr. , a governor of Virginia.

Nelson County had a population of 14,445 as of the 2000 census . 206 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 5,887 households and 4,144 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 82.65 percent white, 14.89 percent African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 0.24 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.62 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.35 percent were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.11 percent of the population.

Of the 5,887 households, 27.1 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 55.7 percent were married couples living together, 10.7 percent were single mothers, 29.6 percent were non-families, 25.0 percent were single households, and 10.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.88 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 21.7 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 6.4 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.6 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 29.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 16.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 94.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 91.4 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 36,769 , and the median income for a family is $ 42,917. Males had a median income of $ 29,684 versus $ 24,153 for females. The per capita income was $ 22,230. 12.1 percent of the population and 8.5 percent of families are below the poverty line. These included 14.4 percent of children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 14.6 percent of residents aged 65 and over.
