Patrick County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 19,407 residents and a population density of 16 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Stuart . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Patrick County is located in southwest Virginia, bordering North Carolina to the south and has an area of 1,258 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Franklin County , Henry County , Carroll County, and Floyd County .

history

It was formed in 1791 from parts of Patrick Henry County, named after the first Virginia governor after independence, Patrick Henry . In 1790 Patrick Henry County was divided into a western part (Patrick County) and an eastern part (Henry County).

Patrick County's population was 19,407 as of the 2000 census . Of these, 229 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 8141 households and 5812 families. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 91.75 percent white, 6.20 percent African American, 0.21 percent Native American, 0.16 percent Asian, 0.04 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.94 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.71 percent were from two or more races. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 96.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 94.9 men.

The median income for a household in the 28,705 USD , and the median income for a family was 36,232 USD. Males had a median income of $ 25,391 versus $ 18,711 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,574. 9.6 percent of families and 13.4 percent of the population were below the poverty line. These included 15.4 percent of children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 18.0 percent of residents aged 65 and over.
