Rappahannock County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000 , the county had 6,983 people and a population density of 10 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Washington .

Rappahannock County is located in northern Virginia and covers an area of 691 square kilometers, of which one square kilometer is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Fauquier County , Culpeper County , Madison County , Page County, and Warren Counties .
history
It was formed in 1833 from parts of Culpeper County. It was named after the Indian word lapihanne or Toppehannock which translated means river of fast flowing water or the tides can mean ebb and flow .

Rappahannock County's population was 6,983 as of the 2000 census . 10 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 2,788 households and 2004 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.64 percent white, 5.44 percent African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 0.21 percent Asian and 0.40 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.15 percent were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.30 percent of the population.
Of the 2,788 households, 27.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 60.5 percent were married couples living together, 7.1 percent were single mothers, 28.1 percent were non-families, 23.4 percent were single households and 7.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.94.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.3 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 5.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 31.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 98.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 97.3 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 45,943 , and the median income for a family was $ 51,848. Males had a median income of $ 32,725 versus $ 22,950 for females. The per capita income was $ 23,863. 5.2 percent of families and 7.6 percent of the population were below the poverty line. These included 10.8 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 3.2 percent of the population aged 65 or over.
