Buckingham County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000, the county had 15,623 people and a population density of 10 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Buckingham .

Buckingham County is located near the geographic center of Virginia and has an area of 1,511 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Fluvanna County , Cumberland County , Prince Edward County , Appomattox County , Nelson County, and Albemarle Counties .

It was formed in 1761 as out of parts of Albemarle County and Appomattox County.

Demographic data
As of the 2000 census , Buckingham County had 15,623 people in 5,324 households and 3,758 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 59.11 percent white, 39.06 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.36 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.08 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.81 percent of the population.
Of the 5,324 households, 30.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 51.1 percent were married couples living together, 14.2 percent were single mothers, 29.4 percent were non-families, 25.1 percent were single households, and 11.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.99 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.4 percent of residents under the age of 18, 7.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 121.6 males. Statistically, there were 126.5 men for every 100 women aged 18 or over.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,882 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,465. Males had a median income of $ 26,302 versus $ 20,491 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,669. 16.0 percent of families and 20.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 26.0 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 19.3 percent were people over 65 years of age.
