Pittsylvania County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000, the county had 61,745 residents and a population density of 25 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Chatham . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Pittsylvania County is located in southwest Virginia, bordering North Carolina to the south and covers an area of 2533 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water. It is divided into seven administrative districts: Banister, Callands-Gretna, Chatham-Blairs, Dan River, Staunton River, Tunstall, and Westover. The county is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Campbell County , Halifax County , Henry County , Franklin County, and Bedford Counties .
history
It was formed in 1767 from parts of Halifax County. It was named after William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham , a Prime Minister of Great Britain .

As of the 2000 census , Pittsylvania County had 61,745 people in 24,684 households and 18,216 families. The population density was 25 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 75.00 percent white, 23.66 percent African American, 0.14 percent Native American, 0.19 percent Asian and 0.37 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.63 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.23 percent of the population.
Of the 24,684 households, 30.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.3 percent were married couples living together, 11.7 percent were single mothers, 26.2 percent were non-families, 23.4 percent were single households, and 9.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.93.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.0 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 26.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.3 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 95.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.9 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,153 , and the median income for a family is $ 41,175. Males had a median income of $ 30,105 versus $ 21,382 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,991. 8.6 percent of families and 11.8 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 14.8 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 16.6 percent were people over 65 years of age.
