Hanover County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 86,320 people and a population density of 71 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Hanover . In 2012 it had a population of 101,327.

Hanover County is located in northeastern Virginia and has an area of ​​1,228 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Caroline County , King William County , New Kent County , Henrico County , Goochland County , Louisa County, and Spotsylvania County .

history

It was formed on November 26, 1720 from parts of New Kent County . It was named after the British King George I from the House of Hanover. During the American Civil War , the county was the site of several battles, such as the Battle of Cold Harbor from May 31 to June 12, 1864 and the Seven Day Battle from June 25 to July 1, 1862.
