Hanover County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 86,320 people and a population density of 71 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Hanover . In 2012 it had a population of 101,327.
geography
Hanover County is located in northeastern Virginia and has an area of 1,228 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Caroline County , King William County , New Kent County , Henrico County , Goochland County , Louisa County, and Spotsylvania County .
history
It was formed on November 26, 1720 from parts of New Kent County . It was named after the British King George I from the House of Hanover. During the American Civil War , the county was the site of several battles, such as the Battle of Cold Harbor from May 31 to June 12, 1864 and the Seven Day Battle from June 25 to July 1, 1862.

According to the 2000 census , there were 86,320 people in Hanover County. Of these, 2,123 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 31,121 households and 24,461 families. The population density was 71 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 88.32 percent white, 9.34 percent African American, 0.33 percent Native American, 0.79 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.37 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.83 percent were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.98 percent of the population.
Of the 31,121 households, 39.5 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 66.4 percent were married couples living together, 9.3 percent were single mothers, 21.4 percent were non-families, 17.7 percent were single households and 6.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.07.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 27.1 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 6.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 10.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 96.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.8 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 59,223 , and the median income for a family is $ 65,809. Males had a median income of $ 42,523 versus $ 30,689 for females. The per capita income was $ 25,120. 2.5 percent of families and 3.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. This included 3.9 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 5.8 percent of residents aged 65 and over.
