Buchanan County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 26,978 residents and a population density of 21 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Grundy . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Buchanan County is located almost in the far west of Virginia, borders West Virginia to the north, Kentucky to the west and covers an area of 1,305 square kilometers with no significant body of water. The county is divided into seven administrative districts: Garden, Hurricane, Knox, North Grundy, Prater, Rock Lick, and South Grundy. In Virginia it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Tazewell County , Russell County, and Dickenson Counties .
history
It was formed in 1858 from parts of Russell County and Tazewell County. It was named after James Buchanan , the 15th President of the USA. In 1880, Dickenson County was formed from parts of Buchanan County, Russel County and Wise County.

Buchanan County's population was 26,978 as of the 2000 census . Of these, 1,205 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 10,464 households and 7,900 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.75 percent white, 2.62 percent African American, 0.06 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian and 0.10 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.33 percent were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.47 percent of the population.
Of the 10,464 households, 30.6 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 60.9 percent were married couples living together, 10.6 percent were single mothers, 24.5 percent were non-families, 22.5 percent were single households, and 9.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.87 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 21.4 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.5 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 11.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 102.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 102.3 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 22,213 , and the median income for a family is $ 27,328. Males had a median income of $ 29,540 versus $ 17,766 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,788. 19.8 percent of families and 23.2 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 30.2 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 16.9 percent were people over 65 years of age.
