Rockbridge County is a county in Virginia in the United States . In 2000, the county had 20,808 residents and a population density of 13 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Lexington .

Rockbridge County is located in western Virginia, about 22 miles from West Virginia , and covers an area of 1,557 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Augusta County , Nelson County , Amherst County , Bedford County , Botetourt County , Alleghany County, and Bath County . The independent cities of Lexington and Buena Vista form enclaves in Rockbridge County.
history
It was formed in 1778 from parts of Augusta County and Botetourt County. It got its name because of the Natural Bridge , a natural rock bridge over Cedar Creek . This is also known in the USA as one of the seven natural wonders of the world.

As of the 2000 census , Rockbridge County had 20,808 people in 8,486 households and 6,075 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.42 percent white, 2.97 percent African American, 0.26 percent Native American, 0.44 percent Asian and 0.12 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.78 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.58 percent of the population.
Of the 8,486 households, 29.2 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 57.5 percent were married couples living together, 9.5 percent were single mothers, 28.4 percent were non-families, 23.9 percent were single households and 9.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.84 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.2 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.7 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 100.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 98.0 men statistically.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 36,035 , and the median income for a family is $ 41,324. Males had a median income of $ 28,217 versus $ 19,946 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,356. 6.6 percent of families and 9.6 percent of the population were below the poverty line. 9.4 percent of these were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 9.6 percent were people over 65 years of age.
