Franklin County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 47,286 people and a population density of 26 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Rocky Mount . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Franklin County is located in central southwest Virginia, about 25 miles south of North Carolina , and covers an area of ​​1,843 square kilometers, of which 50 square kilometers are water. history

It was formed in 1785 from parts of Bedford County, Henry County, and Patrick County. It was named after one of the founding fathers of the United States Benjamin Franklin . The county was home to Confederate General Jubal Anderson Early and Booker T. Washington , a slave who would become one of the most important advocates of human rights. Posey Rorer , a major country musician, also hails from Franklin County.

According to the 2000 census , Franklin County had 47,286 people in 18,963 households and 13,918 families. The population density was 26 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 88.95 percent white, 9.35 percent African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 0.36 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.42 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.71 percent were descended from two or more races.
