The county seat is Marion . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Smyth County is in southwest Virginia; it is with its southern tip about 5 km from Tennessee , in the southeast about 20 km from North Carolina and has an area of ​​1171 square kilometers, of which one square kilometer is water. history

It was formed in 1832 from parts of Washington County and Wythe County. It was named after Alexander Smyth , a general in the American Revolutionary War from 1812 to 1815, senator, member of the House of Representatives and member of the US Congress .
