Pulaski County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000 , the county had 35,127 people and a population density of 42 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Pulaski . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Pulaski County is located in central southwest Virginia and covers an area of 854 square kilometers, of which 23 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Montgomery County , Floyd County , Carroll County , Wythe County , Bland County, and Giles Counties .
history
It was formed in 1839 from parts of Montgomery County and Wythe County. It is named after Kazimierz Pułaski , a general of the War of Independence.

Pulaski County's population was 35,127 as of the 2000 census . Of these, 1,112 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 14,643 households and 10,147 families. The population density was 42 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.60 percent white, 5.57 percent African American, 0.15 percent Native American, 0.32 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.37 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.94 percent were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.96 percent of the population.
Of the 14,643 households, 26.9 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 54.9 percent were married couples living together, 10.5 percent were single mothers, 30.7 percent were non-families, 27.0 percent were single households and 11.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.80.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 20.6 percent of residents under the age of 18, 7.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.7 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.2 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 97.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 95.2 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 33,873 , and the median income for a family is $ 42,251. Males had a median income of $ 30,712 versus $ 21,596 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,973. 10.6 percent of families and 13.1 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 18.9 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 11.5 percent were people over 65 years of age.
